Citrullus lanatus is medicinal plants believed to have many agents acting in different ways for the health benefits of human. This study investigated the acute phytochemical contents and effect of the methanol extract on weight changes, relative organ weight, hematological parameters and biomarkers of prostate dysfunction. The result indicated the presence of alkaloids, terpenes, flavonoids, Reducing sugar, tannins and phenols. Acute toxicity studies showed that the extract was safe at 5000mg/kgbwt. All the animals recorded increase in body weight and the relative organ weight showed significant increase (p<0.05) in relative prostate weight of disease control relative to other experimental groups. The testes and liver weight of disease group decreased (p<0.05) significantly in relative to other experimental groups. There was no changes in the heart, kidney and lungs weight. The result of hematological parameters showed no significant (p>0.05) difference in RBC and MCV in all experimental group. It reveals no significant difference in Hb, PCV, MCH and MCHC between the normal and diseased control group but a significant increase in extract treated groups when compared with the normal and disease control. The WBC level increased significantly (p<0.05) in finasteride group and 400mg/kgbwt when compared with the disease control. The study showed the ability of the plant to act as immune booster, stimulate hemopoiesis and can serve as a source if useful drug because of the presence of phytochemical agents.
